Junk Food Cafe

Before arriving at Brno, Ylvie and I didn’t expect too much from the Czech vegan cuisine. To be honest, we didn’t even expect a vegan food scene at all. However, Julius Caeser knew better, when he said: veni vidi vegan; the Vegans conquered Brno.

The Junk Food Cafe was the first restaurant we visited, it’s located a little bit outside the city center, but still within walking distance, as Brno is not that big. The furniture is quite rustic with folksy bakestone walls and wooden tables, yet the Cafe gives you a homely feeling. We preferred to have a seat outside at one of the tables on the sidewalk since the weather was really really nice!

Okay, let’s get to the interesting part – the Food!

Everything they offer on the menu is vegan and they have a lot of dishes with meat substitutes or tofu. It’s not only a burger place, they also serve salads, paninis and traditional food. Anyways, I love burgers too much to order something else, so I decided to go for the burger with seitan, which came with a huge side salad of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers ,and lettuce, topped with a very delicious dressing with balsamic vinegar.

Ylvie chose a Caeser Salad with grilled Tofu. As you can tell from the picture, her serving was huge as well! I would say, in the Junk Food Cafe the dishes are very big in general. At the time we were there, they had a social experiment and therefore, asked the guests to pay as much as they wanted. (the menu was still with the prices, so we had a little reference point).

How it tasted?

Everything in the burger was fresh, even the bread was homemade. I really liked the roquette in combination with the mustard sauce. Also, for me, onions are a must in every burger! In my opinion, the seitan could have been roasted a little bit longer but that’s really the only thing I could criticize.

The ingredients of the Caeser salad were also fresh and crunchy. Dried tomatoes and croutons give this salad a very special taste. Last but not least, the dressing was above and beyond all expectations!

I would definitely go there again; if you go to Brno you must not miss this place!
